A Summary of the Main Purpose of the Job
The main purpose of the Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) teacher role at Furness Primary School is to deliver a high-quality MFL (Spanish) curriculum to pupils across the school. The aim is:
- To provide Spanish lessons for whole classes and support the school in attending extra- curricular Spanish events out of school hours and providing after-school Spanish activities for groups of pupils.
- Work as part of the curriculum team under the leadership of the Curriculum Lead and will be MFL Subject Lead
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare, implement and deliver a well-structured and progressive MFL curriculum to pupils across the whole school.
- Play a fundamental role in providing a broad and engaging MFL curriculum across all year groups.
- Ensure schemes of work and curriculum developments are accurately in line with updates to the national curriculum.
- Effectively differentiate MFL lessons appropriately so that all pupils’ can access the school's vibrant MFL curriculum offer.
- To monitor, assess and record the progress of individual pupils (and groups) in accordance with school’s policy and procedures, reporting to the class teacher, Year Lead and Curriculum Lead.
- Provide verbal and (where necessary) written feedback to pupils and/or parents/carers on attainment in order to promote further progress.
- Assist staff to develop confidence and competence in teaching MFL by acting as a mentor/coach.
- Set appropriate learning and behaviour expectations of pupils, in line with the school’s behaviour policy, and support pupils appropriately to achieve these.
- Ensure that resources are appropriate and available in order to deliver high quality MFL lessons.
- Act as a positive role model, creating a positive and fun environment in which to motivate and encourage children to participate in MFL.
- Provide increased opportunities for children to participate in MFL activities beyond the classroom and school.
- To attend MFL focussed events with groups of pupils during school time and out of school time, as required.
- Liaise with outside agencies in relation to MFL related events/celebrations.
- Develop talent pathways for exceptional children.
- Provide 1:1 and small group sessions for children with exceptional talent.
- Attend appropriate CPD sessions relevant to the post. Deliver whole-school MFL training and INSET.
General/Other Responsibilities
- Support a broad range of out of hours activities and events including after-school extra-curricular activities.
- Any other reasonable duties necessary to ensure the smooth and effective running of our school.
- Undertake relevant and appropriate training during contracted hours.
The above is not exhaustive and the post holder will be expected to undertake any duties which may reasonably fall within the level of responsibility and the competence of the post, as directed by the Headteacher.
The Person:
- Must have a strong passion for education.
- Must be experienced and have a strong working knowledge of teaching Spanish across all phases.
- Must have strong and effective classroom management skills.
- Must possess the ability to work as part of a team, with a flexible attitude and a calm, organised work ethic. Must have experience and understanding of organising, promoting and evaluating the children’s learning.
- Must be able to deliver well planned, well considered and motivational lessons, with experience of motivating and managing young children effectively.
- Must have the ability to demonstrate outstanding practice in the classroom and be able to accurately record pupil progress.
- Must possess strong communication skills, appropriate to communicating effectively with staff, parents and children.
- Must share our school vision and demonstrate commitment to our continued school improvement drive.
- Can provide leadership, innovation and direction in the Learning and Teaching of the Spanish curriculum.
