Approach to Teaching Phonics
Children are encouraged to read from Nursery including exposing them to reading behaviours and demonstrating a love for books. Similarly children in Reception and Key stage 1 are taught to read following Bug Club Phonics. This comprehensive, systematic, synthetic programme is designed to help children enjoy reading and become flluent readers by the age of seven. It focuses on the simple view of reading.
Approach to Reading Comprehension
- Reading V.I.P.E.R.S. is the approach we use to teach reading across the school. Our aim is to bring the books to life and provide additional experiences to enable children to have full and equal access to high quality texts linked to cross-curricular themes, develop and broaden their vocabulary and provide them with the knowledge and experiences required to infer meaning and deepen their understanding.
- Reading Comprehension – Reading skills are taught within a discrete reading lesson where vocabulary, inference, prediction, explain, retrieve, summarise and sequencing skills are taught and each skill is given individual focus and attention during these lessons.
